Jose Luis Ortega

José Ortega, a native of Chihuahua, Mexico is a Lyric Tenor who did not discover his talent until his early thirties. Today, just five years later he is considered one of the great new talents in the opera world.

Mr. Ortega’s voice was discovered in 2003 by Professor Elaine Cencel of the University of Arkansas and he was quickly chosen as one of the few vocalist to study under the tutelage of Opera Legend Carlo Bergonzi at his private academy in Busseto, Italy.

He continued his studies under Elaine Cencel in 2005 and finished his Bachelors of Voice Performance at the Manhattan School of Music in the spring of 2008.

Most recently Mr. Ortega was invited by Plácido Domingo to join the Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program at Washington National Opera. He has accepted the offer and will be performing in Washington DC through August 2009.
